Looking at the poll for who residents of the motherlode would prefer to see as the next Governor of California, it is becoming clear that locals seem to favor strong environmental leaning candidates. Republican Governor Schwarzenegger, who was the preferred candidate in the last two Governor races, is a self avowed “green revolutionist”.  Now on Schwarzenegger’s heels is Republican candidate Meg Whitman (most favored in the KVML poll above).  Whitman endorsed Senator Barbara Boxer (Democrat) in 2004, Steve Westley for Governor in 2006 (Democrat) and then registered herself as a Republican in 2007.  Whitman recently went on a “climate change” cruise with former White House Green Czar Van Jones. She tells the San Francisco Chronicle that she “loves Van Jones” and is a “big fan” of his. Van Jones removed himself from the White House advisory position last month, after several controversial remarks were revealed. Perhaps with Van Jones roots in the bay area, Whitman will consider hiring Jones as part of her advising staff, should she become the next Governor of California. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI-RBNO2Q8M

Republican Candidate for California Governor, Steve Poizner, answers a reporter’s question about two large donations in 2000 to Democratic Presidential candidate Al Gore.  The first $10,000 check was written to support Gore during the Presidential race. The second $10,000 check was written to help Gore pay for the recount effort as the Presidential race against Republican candidate George W. Bush, was hanging on the outcome of Florida. Poizner says that he and his wife have a joint checking account and that his wife (who is a Democrat) is the one who wrote the checks. Poizner then tells the reporter that he has been answering this question for the past nine years. Is this an attack or a legitimate issue?

The Republican candidate for California Governor in 2010, Meg Whitman speaks with reporters on her dismal voting record over the past three decades. This took place just a couple of days before the San Francisco Chronicle reported that “Whitman contributed $4,000 to Senator Barbara Boxer in the 2004 reelection campaign — and Whitman endorsed Boxer as a part of Technology Leaders for Boxer”. The endorsement and contribution was also confirmed by Boxer aide Rose Kapolczynski. Whitman touted Boxer as a “dynamic and courageous leader” on the tech front. Boxer was then pitted against GOP former Secretary of State Bill Jones. Is the issue of Whitman’s voting record an attack or a legitimate issue?

So many polls this week for one little state… OK, one very populated state with a lot of square mileage. Where do Californian’s stand this week on a number of issues? Thanks to a very busy Field Poll week, here is a glimpse:

President Obama: The President has a 60% job approval among California residents this month compared to his 56% approval nationwide. Although that sounds good for our President, his California approval numbers  have fallen  from 65% six months ago.

Afghanistan: Californians are split on what President Obama should do next in Afghanistan. 33% of California residents want the President to increase the amount of troops, 16% say keep the troop numbers exactly the same and 37% say reduce the number of troops.

Swine Flu: Californians are split on being whether or not to be concerned over the H1N1 virus (swine flu).  51% of all state residents are either concerned or very concerned. Latinos are the most concerned population at 62%. Overall, only 46% of California males show any concern.  However, 72% of all Californians would like to receive the swine flu vaccine for themselves.  When asked how confident residents are that the state public health system could respond effectively to an outbreak of the H1N1 virus, Californian’s have a 67% confidence rate in the system.

I’m Mark Truppner, KVML’s Program Director and host of  “All News, All Morning” which is heard every weekday morning from 6am – 9am. Bill Johnson (KVML News Director) and I make sure that you begin your day armed with the latest national, international, state, sports, business and local news. We also let you know exactly where the loose cows are, as that seems to be a constant traffic problem around here. We live in such a gorgeous area and I’m pleased that we are the one radio station that you have come to trust when it comes to local news coverage.  We work hard to cover every major fire during summer, and throughout the winter we know how much just a little inclement weather can affect your routine. BJ Hansen is the other hard worker in the KVML Newscenter.  BJ can be heard every weekday afternoon, as well as Saturday mornings and almost any time there is breaking news.

Outside of mornings and our own local news, we have the most listened to and popular talk show hosts in the entire nation. Every Tuesday morning we bring you Gov. Schwarzenegger’s weekly radio address. This week we just didn’t have time to bring you the sixteen minute speech in its entirety. By utilizing the new website we can now watch this speech for ourselves.

The speech was delivered at last weeks “Governor’s Global Climate Summit 2” in Los Angeles which wasn’t well talked about in the Motherlode.

The Republican Governor brags how well ahead of the curve California has been in combating “global warming”. He claims in the video that President Obama has copied many of the stringent environmental restrictions that Arnold has already implemented for California .

Schwarzenegger’s lone legislation is not enough… the Governor demands that citizens and community leaders take action and start a green revolution to combat the “indisputable climate change”.

Republicans who funded, backed and voted for Schwarzenegger will probably enjoy watching this almost alarming global warming speech, but I think Democrats will also find several sections of this non-partisan speech that they can agree on and perhaps adapt to their own agenda:

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)– A city official has asked the PGA Tour to remind Michael Jordan that he can’t smoke cigars at Harding Park during the Presidents Cup.

Jordan, inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame last month, is serving as an honorary assistant to U.S. captain Fred Couples. A photo of Jordan smoking his cigar published in the San Francisco Chronicle caught the attention of city officials.

Harding Park is a public facility, and smoking is banned.

“I’ve already sent an e-mail to the PGA tour director,” Recreation and Park general manager Phil Ginsburg told the newspaper. “It was a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal and that we would appreciate their support.”
